Children of the Sun is one of the few works undertaken by the artist on such a monumental scale. It could be considered an early work, but is deeply intertwined with the artists’ interest in the figurative form. The history of the painting intertwines deeply with the national development of Singapore. The Children of the Sun was first commissioned for the opening of the Singapore Conference Hall (currently a National Monument). The painting was then kept on display in the lounge of the conference hall. Painted in 1965 at Datuk Seri Lim’s Pasir Panjang seaside cottage, the Children of the Sun was the first major large painting by Khoo Sui Hoe.
