In this volume, George Moerlein, author and illustrator, narrates his travels in countries such as Japan, Hong Kong, and Singapore. He arrived in Singapore in 1885, docking in Tanjong Pagar and stayed in the Hotel de L’Europe. He gives a detailed description of Singapore’s demographics, customs he witnessed such as betel chewing and Chinese New Year celebrations, and the animals and pests that plagued him even in his hotel room.
