Apart from being an avid photographer, Chua was instrumental in the development of photography in Singapore, having published 2 books on photography, particularly as reference guides for budding local photographers and serving in the committee of the PSS. His contributions were well-regarded by fellow prominent Singaporean photographers like Yip Cheong Fun, Lee Lim and Lee Sow Lim. Chua has a strong realist approach to photographing his subjects, which bears a striking similarity to how the social realist painters were approaching their subjects at that time. His technique demonstrates a disciplined adherence to the conventions of framing and composition, and a mastery of the use of light and shadow.
