The full-length, frontal portrait of the formally seated couple conforms to Chinese tradition.For uncertain reasons, such couple portraits were more common in the Dutch East Indies than in the Straits Settlements. It was customary not to smile and to sit with legs apart, and feet pointed outwards. Photos of this exceptional size were ordered primarily for display in ancestral halls.
