Murshidabad, Patna, Vizag, Bhagalpur, and Bareilly were distinct centres of furniture production. Black and gilt painted and lacquered wooden objects were important features of Bareilly furniture. This is a rare example of a Bareilly painted and lacquered chest. It is finished in black and gold paint portraying a Chinese landscape complete with foliage, pagodas and a floral border. The elaborately painted chest rests on intricately fashioned crisscrossed legs with hoof-like feet.
