The design of this white ground bowl is possibly of the earlier period of porcelain used by Peranakans. It features enamelled pheasants among rockery, peonies and flowers surrounded by a rim of the Eight Buddhist Emblems. This design can be dated to the early 1800s although these bowls probably date to mid to late 19th century. This design is regarded as a predecessor to “nonya ware”, Chinese export porcelain made specifically for Peranakan taste by the late 1900s. This both was used both on the altar and for dining. This bowls bears the stamp of the “Tan Hong Sun company”, which probably belonged to Tan Kim Seng (1805-1864). Tan was a prominent Peranakan Chinese community leader and philanthropist.
