Born in Singapore, Chng Nai Wee attended a part-time course in Western painting in Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (1986-1987) before furthering his studies in art in Yale University in 1999 and 2004. In 1999, he was the recipient of the Young Artist Award in Singapore. Since his first solo show in 1992, Chng has been active in the local art scene, participating in public forums and exhibitions.Working in the medical field, Chng’s art often blends the two disciplines of science and art. In creating this work, Chng used alkyd, a sticky resin. This work is part of a pair of heads, ‘Angst’ and ‘Apathy’, which is a manifestation of Chng’s subconscious. While ‘Angst’ depicts a devilish snare, ‘Apathy’ shows a head, empty of emotions, like a living dead. To Chng, apathy is what many choose, to remain powerless when angst overcomes them.
