Introduced in 1985 to recognise and reward students who save regularly, the Squirrel Savers Club was part of the National School Savings Campaign, a nationwide campaign that began in 1969 to promote the virtue of thriftiness among young students. Known for its habit of storing food for rainy days, the squirrel was chosen as the mascot for the campaign with the aim of inspiring students to save. The squirrel appeared on several of the publicity materials and activities associated with the campaign, including bookmarks, posters, the cover of the POSB account book for children, as well as educational shows.
