This colonial period painting depicts a group of curious European visitors at the famous Vishnupada Temple in Gaya, Bihar state of northern India. It is interesting to note that this temple is an important Hindu pilgrimage centre associated with last rites (conducted at the time of death) and shraddha (death rituals conducted annually) and is visited by most Hindus atleast once in their lifetime to perform death rites of their ancestors.
