This portrait coin was issued in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). It bears the portrait of His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam. Brunei became a member of ASEAN on 8 January 1984. ASEAN was formed in Bangkok, Thailand on 8 August 1967.
