This is the handle of a type of work knife common throughout the Indonesian Archiepelago and known in Malay as a pisau raut. This example most likely came from the Iban or Kayan people of Northern Borneo. Knives like this are often found attached to Dayak mandau swords and are called munbat by the Iban or haut nyu by the Kayan. This particular handle is of especially fine quality and would have been used by a person of high rank. Such knives were usually used for woodcarving or for splitting rattan
