The groves on this gold ornament were achieved by chasing. This could have been used as an ear ornament. However, it has been suggested that such round band ornaments with a gap in the loop were perhaps not ear ornaments, but cord clips used to hold cords together around the waist or placed in conical coiffures as depicted on statues. This ornament belongs to a period in Java, which saw a profusion of jewellery forms.
