Born in Singapore in 1946, Nai Swee Leng who graduated from Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts in 1966 was one of the founders of the Molan Art Association and a committee member of the Society of Chinese Artists until 1992. He is actively engaged in the local and international art scenes, participating in solo and joint exhibitions; his first solo exhibition was held in 1974. Nai first learnt about the Shanghai School of painting when he studied under Fan Chang Tien; and the Lingnan School, another branch of Chinese ink painting, from Chao Shao An. In this bird-and-flower painting, a genre which forms a large part of Nai’s repertoire, his maturity and skill in handling the ink medium can be seen in the nuanced ink washes that illustrate distance and texture.
