The photograph depicts a view of the Esplanade with the clubhouse of the Singapore Cricket Club in the foreground on the left. Now commonly known as the Padang, the Esplanade was a popular recreational area for cricket, rugby and evening strolls. The Singapore Cricket Club, founded in 1852, had its third clubhouse completed in 1884. In the background, Hotel de L'Europe and the spire of St Andrew's Cathedral can be seen. This was the third building of St Andrew's Cathedral which was built by convict labour under the direction of Major J.F.A. McNair.
