Born in 1954 in Singapore, Ng Yak Hwee is a graduate of Singapore’s former Nanyang University (Botany major). An accomplished painter and sculptor, Ng received the 1987 Silver Medal from the Salon des Artistes Français, and won First Prize (Figurative category) in the 1992 UOB Painting of the Year Competition. As a self-taught artist, Goh has experimented with various styles since the 1970s and explored the use of a wide range of medium in the process, such as batik painting, paper collage, acrylic and oil painting, and found object sculpture. In this collage on canvas Goh has immersed himself fully into the abstract realm and unlike his other landscape works from the same period he has not included any literal references. The work presents an aerial view through the clouds to the patchwork landscape with roads lying below, as if viewed from the window of an overhead-flying airplane.
