Born in 1959 in Singapore, Angeline Choo Ai Loon (daughter of artist Choo Keng Kwang) graduated in 1980 from Singapore’s Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. Followed by multiple accolades, in 1982 Choo was commissioned to create orchid paintings for presentation by the Singapore government during the 15th ASEAN Ministerial Meeting.Although best known for her realistic renditions of orchids in oil and watercolour, Choo demonstrates with this quirky yet confrontational painting just how skilfully she wields her instruments of creation regardless the subject matter. Choo’s detailed observation here is neither clinical nor analytical; she has imbued her inanimate objects with a sensitivity that suggests there is more to this picture than meets the eye. Set slightly off-centre against the neutral concrete wall, the masculine plastic and wire clothes hangers, feminine suspended panties and entangled shadows create a juxtaposition of nervous energies. This isolated environment hints at bleakness and solitude.
