This table was part of an ensemble of six furniture pieces designed by Singapore architect Tay Kheng Soon (b. 1940) while he was pursuing his Diploma in Architecture at the Singapore Polytechnic between 1958 to 1963. It was a personal project he undertook for the matrimonial home of his wife's cousin. The radial-matched teak veneering on this dining table was finely executed by the Shanghainese carpenter engaged by the young couple for the production of this ensemble of furniture. The base of the table is formed by flat, thin lengths of metal intersecting at 60 degree intervals, with 6 equidistant legs supporting the table top. This gives the legs an unususal profile that plays with thick and thin dimensions when viewed from different positions.
