This sarong is decorated with large sprays of chrysanthemum flowers grouped together in a bouquet, with birds and butterflies darting around them. Variations of such floral patterns recur in batik from this time and is known as the buketan motif. It was a design popularised by Eurasian batik makers. This batik, signed “L. Metz. Pek”, was made in the workshop of Lien Metzelaar, a Eurasian batik maker from Pekalongan.Batik sarongs were worn by women in the Straits Settlements and the Dutch East Indies as a skirt to accompany a top known as a kebaya.
