This is a photograph of Chan Shu May receiving the Defence Medal from Governor Franklin Gimson, as a representative of the Medical Auxiliary Service (MAS). Chan Shu May was born in Jiangsu, China in 1920, and subsequently moved to Singapore. She was with the MAS during World War Two. The MAS provided medical aid during the Japanese bombing of Singapore. She then worked as a midwife from the 1950s to the 1970s before becoming a fulltime housewife.
