Skipping ropes are a traditional means of entertainment, having been enjoyed by people around the world for hundreds of years. Skipping came to Europe through the Netherlands in the 1600s, when it was considered to be a boys' game. It only gained popularity amongst girls from the 19th century onwards and in more recent times, skipping ropes are used for a variety of children's games and as part of adults' fitness regimens.
