This is a poster of ‘The Dance and the Railroad’ directed by Alan Lyddiard in 1991, a performance where Goh Siew Geok(吴书玉) served as the Chinese Opera director. It is one of the initiatives undertaken by Goh Siew Geok when she assumed the role as the Ambassador of Arts for Singapore in the Singapore-Scotland cultural exchange programme. It also represents one of the first initiatives launched by the National Arts Council (established in 1991) to promote the internationalization of Singapore’s arts and culture. The performance was showcased in Glasgow, Cardiff, and Manchester and was directed by Alan Lyddiard, a renowned theatre and film director in the UK who held the position of Artistic Director of Northern Stage, Newcastle upon Tyne. Notably, the production integrated Chinese opera into a play written by American playwright David Henry Hwang.
