Kewpie is a brand of dolls and figurines that were initially conceived as comic strip characters by American cartoonist and suffragette Rose O'Neill. The baby Cupid character Kewpie began to gain popularity after the publication of O'Neill's comic strips in 1909. O’Neill described the Kewpie as "a sort of little round fairy whose one idea is to teach people to be merry and kind at the same time."The Kewpie dolls were initially made from bisque ceramics with other materials being subsequently introduced, such as soft rubber and vinyl versions produced from the 1960s onwards.Kewpie dolls continue to be sold in Singapore and were the inspiration behind the Japanese mayonnaise brand of the same name, which is also well-known in Singapore.
