Gift of Ho Tit Coffee Powder Factory

This item was used by Ho Tit Coffee Factory to label the tins it used to store the coffee beans it roasted. Known as Ho Tit Coffee Powder Factory today, the local coffee factory was founded by Chua Tok Hoon (1919–1988) in the early 1950s. Chua arrived in Singapore from Fujian Province when he was in his 20s and had worked in a coffee factory, picking up the skills of the trade before setting up his own shop after the end of World War Two. Ho Tit roasted coffee beans that were used to brew the traditional Nanyang coffee found in in coffeeshops, or kopitiams, in Singapore. For close to 60 years, Ho Tit roasted its own coffee beans for distribution to various retail businesses in Singapore, including coffeeshops, market stalls and provision shops.
