This memorandum of association of the Utusan Malayu was signed between its six key shareholders in April 1910. Utusan Malayu (not to be confused with the other Malay-language newspaper, Utusan Melayu) was an offshoot of the Singapore Free Press launched in 1907 with the intention to reach out to Malay-speaking audience in Singapore. Initially circulating thrice a week, Utusan Malayu became a daily from the years 1915 to 1921. Interestingly, the periodical carried news in both Jawi and romanized Malay scripts - the former to be accessible by Malay readers, and the latter for Straits Chinese readers. Eunos Abdullah acted as the paper's editor in its first two years, and continued to work with the paper until his departure in 1914. The Utusan Malayu would become one of the earliest platforms for commentaries and opinion pieces on the concept of the bangsa or nation in Singapore and Malaya.
