This set of furniture consists of four chairs, two side tables and one settee. It belonged to Florence Tan who was the granddaughter of Teochew towkay Heng Mui Keng (1883-1951) and his Peranakan wife Tan Khin Neo. Heng Mui Keng Terrace, a road now part of the campus of the National University of Singapore, was named after him. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Tan Khin Neo preached in the Kampong Kapor Methodist Church’s Malay services. Blackwood furniture inlaid with mother-of-pearl were often favoured by early generations of Chinese Peranakans, and commonly placed in the thia besar (big hall) of the home.
