This menu was for a gala night dinner held on board the SS Carthage, which features the national emblem of Scotland, the thistle, on its cover. The SS Carthage was part of the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&O) fleet, which was one of the prominent shipping companies in the 19th and 20th centuries that offered steamer services for mail, cargo and passengers. On this occasion, the SS Carthage had departed Singapore on 6 September 1961 and was headed for London.
