Born in Malacca, Malaysia in 1963, Ahmad Abu Bakar moved to Singapore as a child. Today, he is recognised for his multi-disciplinary approach to artmaking and has produced works across a wide range of media including ceramics, installation, video, photography and performance. Journey from a Point to Geometry is a 17-year long iterative series the artist embarked on since 1998, centered around the exploration of unity and balance. The artist’s interests in unity and balance emerges from a desire to express, in his own words, “the balance of the material world made up of elements like the environment, the economy and the spiritual world which is essentially religion, family and culture”. In Journey from a Point to Geometry #2, the forms and sense of balance loosely reference the architectural elements of stupas and domes of mosques and churches across the artist’s travels across Southeast Asia in Indonesia and Thailand, as well as the Middle East.
