The Quests were one of the most popular Singaporean bands of the 1960s. The original four band members, Jap Chong, Raymond Leong, Henry Chua and Lim Wee Guan, were teenagers living in Tiong Bahru who were inspired by British music records featuring the electric guitar. The band started out doing covers before writing their own music and becoming famous for their first record release with the music label EMI with the song “Shanty”. This became the first song by a local band to reach the top of the Singapore charts, displacing a song by The Beatles and staying there at the top for over 10 weeks. They were the first band to transcend language barriers as well, with songs in English, Mandarin and Malay across various musical genres. This vinyl record was released in 1970, the same year that The Quests disbanded, and has a compilation of covers by them.
