This blue and white batik sarong would have been worn by its Peranakan Chinese owner during periods of mourning, matched with an open jacket known as a kebaya. Peranakan ladies wore batik skirtcloths of two formats: a tubeskirt (kain sarong) or skirtcloth (kain panjang). Sombre colours of black, blue and green were considered appropriate for the traditional 3 year mourning period. As the mourning period progressed the colours of the sarong and kebaya worn changed from black to blue to green.
