This handbook in English, Malay and Chinese, is a compilation of content published in the Nanyang Siang Pau newspaper the previous year and republished as a book due to popular demand from youths (as indicated in the introduction to the book). It intends to provide the information that first-time National Servicemen would need to know, such as ranks and drill commands, as well as translations for terms and commands that use the Malay language. It also urges youths to be proud of the opportunity to serve the country. This is a rare example of the types of material that youths in the early days of National Service (NS) may have accessed to help prepare them for NS.
