Done by an unidentified English artist, this watercolour painting depicts a scene from Pulau Ubin, an island to the southeast of Singapore, presumably looking towards Singapore. Through paintings such as this piece, we can have a sense of what the minimally altered landscapes in Singapore might have looked like during the 19th century. The compact size of this watercolour painting may also suggest that such paintings served as visual souvenirs for the artists themselves, especially those travelling through Singapore in the mid to late 19th century, before the advent of photography.
