John Turnbull Thomson was the Government Surveyor of the Straits Settlements (1841-1853), and is famed in part for his watercolour painting, The Esplanade from Scandal Point (1851). Some of his other artistic outputs included coloured lithographs such as this piece depicting a scene of Singapore Town from Government Hill, a genre that was quite popular amongst artists in Singapore during the 19th century.
