This EZ-Link card is a contactless smart card that was used to pay bus and MRT fares by tapping a reader at the start and end of journeys. It could also be used to pay fees for Electronic Road Pricing (ERP), a toll system to manage traffic congestion. The cards were launched on 13 April 2002 by EZ-Link, a subsidiary of the Land Transport Authority. They were introduced to improve boarding times and to ensure payment of the correct fare. They replaced TransitLink cards, magnetic cards that had to be swiped through a reader.
