This covered jar may have been part of a garniture — a set of matching decorative objects that became a popular form of display in Europe in the 17th century. Garnitures could be made up of many different types of objects, including ceramics from Asia. The jar was made with an unusual combination of lacquer and porcelain, making it a rarity among Japanese productions for the export market. The interior and undersides of the jar are glazed, while the exterior was left unglazed and covered in layers of black lacquer and wax. The gold-painted decoration and pigments were added last.
