This pair of fans - one for the bride and one for the groom - would have been used during the "bersanding" stage of traditional Muslim weddings in the Malay world, where the bride and groom are seated next to each other and presented to guests. The floral design is executed as tekat timbul or traditional Malay couched embroidery. These fans have been used for weddings in the Aljunied family, one of the more prominent Hadhrami Arab Peranakan families in Singapore and the region. All embroidery work was executed by one of the family’s matriarch, Sharifah Noor Aljunied, who was well known for her skill and talent.
