Gift of Lina Wong Pui Yin in memory of her father Wong Ming Pak.

On one side, an excerpt from Ji Kang’s 嵇康 writing about health and wellness was written in cursive script. It was signed off by Xi San 希三 and Zhan (展翁). The other leaf was decorated with gold speckles after the painting of yellow and red chrysanthemum and calligraphy was done. The poem sings praises of the chrysanthemum, a symbol of the autumn season, by comparing to the osmanthus and winter blossom and was also signed off by Zhan 展.The fan belonged to Wong Ming Pak who had a deep appreciation for Chinese calligraphy. He met some visiting Chinese luminaries who left him autographed fans.A sign of scholarly, learned disposition, the folding fan was a classic men’s fashion accessory in the gentry circle such that men were only considered properly dressed when seen with one. They were often personalised with paintings, poetry and calligraphy and exchanged as gifts among the literati as tokens of friendship. Fan leaves may be removed from the fan frame after wear and tear or remounted on individual sheets of paper for preservation as artworks.
