This bridal outfit was worn by Sharifah Rugayah Aljunied for her wedding in 1964, and reflects Malay world influence on Arab Peranakan dress. The outfit is a Malay baju kurung, which comprises a long-sleeved tunic and a long, ankle-length skirt. The style is reflective of what was in vogue during the 1960s, a more closely-fitted style similar to the kebaya Kota Bharu style. Along with the ensemble is a delicate embroidered selendang (shoulder cloth or shawl that can also be used a veil or head covering). The main embroidery design on the tunic and skirt consist of floral motifs as stalks and sprays of flowers. The exquisite "tekat timbul" or traditional Malay couched embroidery, was executed by one of the family's matriarchs, Sharifah Noor Aljunied. The embroidery on the selendang is of a different form known as "kelingkan" or "keringkam" in Malay where the metallic filaments used are typically flat ribbons.
