This wedding dress was designed and made by the doyenne of bridal gowns in Singapore, Sylvia Kho. Sylvia Kho begun making wedding gowns after the second world war, and designed and sold them from her home. This gown, made in 1959, was designed from her home-based business before she opened an outlet in Tanglin Shopping Centre.This dress belonged to Maureen Martens for her wedding to Peter Martens on 31st October 1959. Maureen only specified that she wanted long sleeves with tapered points, and let Sylvia Kho make all other decisions, such as using Swiss Lace for the dress. Sylvia Kho also designed and made her bridesmaid dresses and came to Maureen’s home on the morning of her wedding to help her with her make up. Maureen and Peter were married in St Joseph’s Church with a reception in the Singapore Recreation Club. Both Eurasians, they had a seven tier sugee cake as their wedding cake, with other members of the Eurasian community such as Benjie Kleinman involved in the music and celebration.
