This cigarette case was a gift from Czarevitch Nicholas of Russia to Singapore’s Master Attendant Crauford RN during his visit to Singapore in 1891. The Czarevitch had embarked on a grand tour to Vladivostok for the inauguration of the building works of the Eastern Section of the Trans-Siberian Railway. His route to Vladivostok included stops in various ports in Asia, including Egypt, India, China, Siam, Singapore, Java and Japan.The Czarevitch arrived on his ship, the Pamiat Azova, in Singapore on 3rd March 1891. Johnston’s Pier, the Post Office and the Master Attendant’s office were all decorated to welcome the Czar on shore that afternoon, and residents of Singapore gathered at Johnston’s Pier to witness his arrival. The Czar visited the Government House before returning to his ship and left for Batavia the next day.
