This is a Bodhisattva figure made of Dehua porcelain (also known in the West as “Blanc de Chine” which is the French term for "White from China”). The Bodhisattva figure is seated in a royal pose on a square block. The artist of this figure, Su Xianzhong 苏献忠, has given it the title of "映像9" ("Yingxiang 9"; i.e. no. 9 from the Yingxiang 映像 series). The title of the series, “Yingxiang 映像”, can be translated as “Image”, “Imagery” or “Reflections”. This piece is no. 11 in an edition of 99 made in this design using the same mould. Certification has been given by the artist to the effect that the mould would be destroyed in the event that all 99 pieces have been produced. This is accepted practice for artworks that are made in multiples. Su Xianzhong 苏献忠 (b. 1968) is an established artist and a fourth-generation ceramist from a long line of respected traditional porcelain sculptors' family. Su was born in Dehua, Fujian, China, and studied at Jingdezhen Ceramic Institute.
