Guanyin, or Avalokiteshvara, is depicted here as a woman. She wears a crown with images of Amitabha Buddha, who is Guanyin’s guiding Buddha, and sits in royal ease on a qilin. In her left hand she holds a book, which is the Buddhist scripture. In this context, Guanyin is the representation of Wisdom.
