This yellow plastic box bears the image of a woman on the lid, which is surrounded by the phrases ‘囍‘, the Chinese wedding symbol for double happiness, and ‘Sylvia Kho’. The box would have been used in Sylvia Kho’s bridal boutiques to pack evening gowns and accessories for her customers. Sylvia Kho was one of Singapore’s earliest postwar bridal designers, known for her stylish Western-style white wedding gowns. Initially starting as a home-based business in 1946, she later went overseas to acquire western dressmaking and other bridal-related service skills. In 1968, she established a boutique, offering a complete bridal service in Tanglin Shopping Centre. Its clientele included brides of wealthy businessmen, politicians, and members of royalty from the region. She was inducted into the Singapore Women’s Hall of Fame in 2017. Sylvia began sewing at a young age, learning Peranakan beadwork and sewing from her nyonya mother.
