This plate features four flags representative of the Republican era. They include the “18-Star Flag”, “Five-Colour Flag”, Kuomintang party flag and the Flag of the Republic of China. This plate was likely produced after Chiang Kai Shek’s Northern Expedition in 1928, and was used by the Chinese community in Singapore. The outbreak of Wuchang Uprising in 1911, ushered in an age of transformation in China as a nation, by overthrowing two thousand years of feudal monarchy and establishing a republic. The establishment of Republic of China had greatly impacted oversea Chinese and reflected through many aspects of their life. The motifs of the flags were prevalent in many everyday items such as this plate.
