Silver and pearl mourning ornaments were worn by nonyas for a period of three years to commemorate the loss of a loved one. During this time, gold and diamond ornaments were set aside. This necklace inscribed "MRS ONG PENG HOCK" was part of a group of mourning jewellery worn by Mdm Lim Yeok Quan (Mrs Ong Peng Hock) (1888-1959). Mdm Lim was the wife of Ong Peng Hock (1889-1968), son of Ong Sam Leong (1857-1918). The residence of Mr and Mrs Ong Peng Hock was at "Christmas Island Villa", 47 Marine Parade Road, Singapore.
