Gift of Mrs Chan Ah Kow

This piece was worn by Lucy Chan for her wedding to Chan Ah Kow. Lucy Chan and Chan Ah Kow were the parents of Patricia Chan. Patricia Chan was known as the 'Golden Girl' of Singapore for her sporting achievements in swimming. Mrs Chan and her husband were instrumental in their daughter's success. Mr Chan Ah Kow would train his children himself before and after work at his clinic in Rochore. Mrs Chan would chaperone the children to swimming practice and to school. This gown is not a traditional wedding dress. Rather, it is a dress bought from the high street store Hilda's, which operated on Middle Road. Mrs Chan wore this dress together with gloves that matched the dress and a veil for her wedding ceremony. However, she wore a two-piece suit with Chinese elements for the san zhao hui men (三朝回门).
