This sarong is signed “Tan Khiok Nio”, which is the name of the workshop that produced it. Large repeating flower bouquet motifs (buketan) in the body (badan) and contrasting head section (kepala) of the garment were a popular feature among the batiks worn by Eurasian and Chinese Peranakan women. The body is densely filled with minute depictions of foliage, fishes, and ducks. This is a style produced by makers in Pekalongan, although often attributed to Demak. Located along the north coast of Java, Pekalongan was a major batik-producing centre from at least the first decades of the 20th century.
