Sarongs were paired with kebaya as part of a matching set and worn by Peranakan women. The light purple kebaya, features embroidered floral motifs and the deep purple sarong features bouquets of yellow jasmine flowers on a floral background. Floral motifs are common in sarong kebaya designs due to their feminine associations. This sarong kebaya belonged to a Chitty Melakan family. Chitty Melakans are descended from marriages between South Indian Hindu merchants and local inhabitants.
