This is a cheongsam dating to the 1960s. The 1950s to 1960s were part of the golden period of the cheongsam as an everyday dress in Singapore. The traditional one piece dress took on a more fitted form with a wasp waist, and was made in a variety of new materials and patterns. This cheongsam is made of Swiss eyelet cotton, a relatively more expensive imported fabric. This cheongsam was worn by Sin Mee Kuen, a mandarin teacher at Nan Hua Girls' School. Although Sin wore a cheongsam to teach, this cheongsam was not for daily wear. Instead, it would be reserved for occasions such as taking family photos.
