This brush pot was produced in commemoration of the Ninth National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC), which was held in April 1969. The National Congress is held every five years to set major policies and to elect the party leadership. The design features imagery related to the Chinese Communist Party such as the Party flag and Tian’anmen (Gate of Heavenly Peace) which signified the communists’ rise to power, as well as a pine tree, which can be read as a symbol of the Party’s strength and endurance. The inscription on the base of the brush pot indicates that it was produced by the Jianguo Porcelain Factory (建国瓷厂) in Jingdezhen. Jianguo was the first Chinese state-owned porcelain factory to be established in 1950, soon after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949.
