This large vase is covered in a sky-blue celadon finely crackled glaze reminiscent of Song dynasty guan or ge wares, and carved in shallow relief with rhythmic linear furrows that break up its monumentality. This is characteristic of the ceramic art of Nakajima Hiroshi (b. 1933), who was born in Takeo City, Saga Prefecture, and designated a Living National Treasure in 2007 for his achievements in seiji (celadon) innovation. The artist presented the vase in wrapping cloth and a signed wooden box to the late Minister-Mentor Lee Kuan Yew on 13 June 2014.
